About Seabournes Studios
Seabournes Studios has been set up at our home, as a space for workshops with professional artists and for non-taught art retreats.
It is a place where individuals (with or without partners) can come on workshops to be tutored by professional artists or, on retreats, where artists can spend a few days, simply focussing on their art, alongside other artists. No tuition will be given on retreats .
On taught workshops, tuition can take place in the studio or, en plein air in the beautiful gardens which run down to and along the River Wye. Likewise with retreats, the studio, gardens and river bank are to be enjoyed as a space to rejuvenate and ‘breathe’ whilst painting.
The gardens were laid down in the 1920s along Arts and Crafts lines. Some of the structure has now gone but we are slowly restoring as much as we can. There are fabulous mature trees, both native and specimen, with formal areas, wilder areas and the natural habitat along the river bank.
The house was once part of an ancient complex which includes Fawley Chapel . There is a natural ford on the river here, where in the 11th Century, Fawley acted as a distribution centre. The monks residing here, received produce from both sides of the river, placing them onto boats to be taken up and down stream.
Our local market towns are Ross on Wye, Ledbury and the cathedral City of Hereford,. We lie on a stretch of river known as the Middle Wye.
About Karen Hartwell Baker
My journey into art began with a short course at the Welsh Academy of Art. In the past two years I have been lucky enough to attend workshops with some wonderful artists: Roger Dellar, Aldo Balding, Jenny Aitken, Julian Merrow Smith and James Naughton.
I love the workshop atmosphere, where you learn not only from the tutor but from other artists. Best of all, you have given yourself all day, every day of the course, immersed in painting and this wonderful feeling has been my raison d’être for setting up the studios here.
The idea behind the retreats is to allow artists a space to focus on their own work without everyday business encroaching on painting time.
